L FEATURES Study Abroad program expandod, transformod AROUND THE WORLD IN ONE SEMESTER WITH NEW STUDY ABROAD DESTINATIONS By Ellen Nicholas Staff Writer "If we want a new generation of leaders and innovators who can be effective in an ever more globalized world, sending our students overseas is not a luxury," travel writer Rick Steves wrote in USA Today on Jan. 18. "It's a necessity." Which is why Guilford is expanding its study abroad program. "You're not getting a complete education that prepares you for the world unless you have studying abroad as part of that education," said Daniel Diaz, Study Abroad program assistant. To help make this vision a reality, Guilford's Study Abroad office has undergone a dramatic transformation. Professor of Theatre Studies Jack Zerbe took over as the director of Study Abroad last May. Zerbe and Diaz, who also came to the department in May, have brought new energy and vision with them. "There are no limits to our imagination about what we think could be possible," said Zerbe. "We have never said about something we were contemplating, 'Well, See "Study Abroad" on Pages 6 & 7 Senior Sarah Stangl plays in the Senegalese sand while abroad. NEWS Religious Emphasis Week brings discussion across GuQford By Keyla Beebe Staff Writer (Right) Junior Sara Hussein shares during the "Me, Myself as a Muslim" panel on Jan. 25 under Todd Drake's "American Muslims' Self Portraits" photography exhibit. While many students at Guilford may not consider themselves religious, most can easily empathize with a story of being pranked by waking up to a giant poster of George W. Bush over your bed. Luby Casey Campus Ministry visitor Shane Claiborne told this and many other stories as he spoke at the New Garden Friends Meeting Center to help start off Religious Emphasis Week. The Guilford Community of Religious Observants sponsored its twenty-second annual Religious Emphasis Week, featuring a variety of events from notable speakers to root beer keggers. "The point is to let folks know what is happening on campus," said GCRO co-clerk Scott Weiss, senior. "It has a dual purpose to coordinate between groups and to generate awareness on all the religious activities." Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Aaron Fetrow said that the college wants the new Founders Hall to serve as the hub of activity and the focal point for student programs. "We hope students will use Founders very informally and spend time studying, hanging out and meeting," said Fetrow. Fetrow credited Vice President for Administration Jon Vamell and President and Professor of Political Science Kent Chabotar with making the Founders renovation — which has been made possible by donations — a priority. "There was not one dollar of tuition money put into the renovations of Founders Hall," said Chabotar. Varnell said that though the materials and appearance will be innovative, the idea to give Founders a fresh look and feel are far from being new. "The Founders renovations build on many visions created over the past decade with various Founders plans that have been done by groups of faculty, staff and students," said Varnell. The Founders renovation will include a stairwell in its center, with the upstairs overlooking the space below in a top-to- See "Renovations" on Page 2 This week online: WWW.GUILFORDIAN.COM Check THE GUtUORDIAN online for these Web- exclusive stories and videos!
